App or website: what do you really need?

22 October 2026 · 4 min read

An app sounds professional, but it is not always the best choice. How to decide whether a website, a web app or a real app fits your business.

Many business owners ask us for an app. Sometimes that is exactly right, sometimes a fast website does the same for a fraction of the price. These questions help you decide.

What should it do?

Do you mainly want to be found, show what you do and let customers book or order? Then a website is almost always enough. Google finds a website; an app in the App Store is not found the same way.

How often do your customers use it?

An app only makes sense if people open it often: a weekly order, a loyalty card, a schedule or a members area. Something customers need once a year, they will not install.

The three options

  • Website: findable on Google, works on every device, the fastest and cheapest option.
  • Web app: a website that behaves like an app. Customers add it to their home screen with one tap and can receive push notifications. No App Store needed.
  • Real app (iPhone and Android): found in the App Store and Play Store and can do more with the phone, such as the camera or Bluetooth. More expensive to build and maintain.

Think about maintenance too

Apple and Google release new versions every year. A real app therefore needs regular updates and new reviews by the stores. Budget for that, not just for the build.

Our advice

Start with a good website with online booking or ordering. If customers come back often, add a web app. Only when you really need phone features, go for an app in the stores. Not sure? Book a free intro call and we will give you an honest view.
