Is my website secure? 5 things you can check yourself

10 October 2026 · 4 min read

Five quick checks that show whether your website is properly secured, no technical knowledge needed.

You don’t have to be a developer to spot the biggest risks on your website. With these five checks you’ll know where you stand in ten minutes.

1. Is there a padlock in the address bar?

Open your site and look next to the address. See “Not secure”? Then data, like a filled-in contact form, is sent unencrypted. An HTTPS certificate is free these days and should always be on.

2. When was everything last updated?

Outdated software is the number one cause of hacked websites. Using WordPress? Log in and check for updates to WordPress itself, your theme and your plugins. Remove plugins you don’t use.

3. Do you have a backup you have actually restored?

A backup you have never tested is really a gamble. Ask your hosting provider how often backups are made and how quickly you can restore one.

4. Who can log in?

Go through the admin accounts. Former staff or a previous web developer still with access? Remove them. Turn on two-factor authentication and use a password manager.

5. Test your security headers

Security headers tell the browser how to load your site safely. Enter your address at securityheaders.com and see which grade you get. Anything below a B is worth improving.
