Setting up your Google Business Profile: get found locally

22 October 2026 · 5 min read

A free Google Business Profile puts you on Google Maps and in local search results. How to set it up properly, step by step.

When someone searches for “hairdresser near me” or “garage Veenendaal”, Google first shows a map with businesses. You only appear there with a Google Business Profile. It is free and, for most local businesses, the fastest way to be found more often.

1. Create the profile

Go to google.com/business and sign in with your business Google account, not an employee’s personal account. Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your shop front or Chamber of Commerce registration, without extra keywords. Adding keywords is against Google’s rules.

2. Shop or service area?

Do customers come to you, as with a hairdresser or garage? Then enter your address. Do you go to the customer, like an installer or IT support? Then choose a service area with the towns you work in and hide your address.

3. Choose the right category

The main category carries a lot of weight. Pick the category that best describes what you are, then add a few extra categories for your other services.

4. Verify

Google wants to be sure you are the owner. These days this often happens with a short video showing your business, your sign or van and your workplace. Sometimes it can be done by phone or email. Only after verification does your profile become properly visible.

5. Complete the profile

  • Opening hours, including public holidays.
  • Your website, phone number and a link to book or order.
  • Real photos of your business, your team and your work. No stock photos.
  • A short description in plain language: what you do and for whom.
  • Your services or products with a short explanation.

6. Reviews: ask, and always respond

Reviews are one of the most important factors for your position on the map. Ask happy customers for a review using the share link from your profile. Respond to every review, including negative ones, calmly and politely. Never write reviews yourself or buy them: Google removes them and can restrict your profile.

7. Keep it alive

Post an update now and then with a photo, an offer or news. Make sure your name, town and website are the same everywhere: on your website, your social media and in business directories. That way Google knows for sure it is the same business.

And your website?

Your profile and your website strengthen each other. A fast website with your town, your services and clear contact details helps Google rank you higher. Want us to take a look? Book a free intro call.
