Account hacked? Do this straight away
Can’t log in anymore, or is your account sending strange messages? These steps limit the damage and help you get your account back.
A hacked email or social media account feels like panic. The faster you act, the smaller the damage. Work through these steps calmly.
1. Use another, safe device
Not sure whether your computer is infected? Change your passwords from another device you trust, such as your phone.
2. Change your password and log everyone out
Choose a new, unique password. With most services, use the option to log out on all devices. Can’t log in anymore? Use the service’s own recovery process, never a link from an email or message.
3. Turn on two-factor authentication
That way an attacker cannot get in with just your password. Preferably use an authenticator app.
4. Check what has changed
- Recovery email address and phone number: are they still yours?
- Forwarding rules and filters in your email: attackers often quietly forward your email.
- Connected apps and devices: remove anything you do not recognise.
5. Other accounts with the same password
Did you use that password elsewhere? Change it there too. A password manager helps you have a different password for every service.
6. Warn your contacts and your bank
Tell friends, family or customers that messages in your name may be fake, especially requests for money. Has money been transferred or have payment details leaked? Call your bank right away. In the Netherlands, report fraud to the Fraudehelpdesk and file a police report if your identity has been misused.
